AUSTRALIA LAGS BEHIND AS 1000S CALL FOR MARRIAGE EQUALITY AT BELFAST PRIDE

Post Date:- 08.12.16

While Australia struggles to decide whether marriage equality is a matter for plebiscite or parliament, 1000s of members of the Northern Irish community have called for same-sex marriage to be legalised at the country’s annual Pride event in Belfast.

Advocates for same-sex marriage came together in force to march down Belfast streets calling for the reform.

Last year the Northern Irish Assembly voted to approve marriage equality 53-51 but the Democratic United Party overrode the vote to block equality for a fifth time and veto same-sex marriage legislation.

Last week the Isle of Man voted to approve marriage equality, leaving Northern Ireland as the only part of the UK that does not have same-sex marriage, despite recent polls by Amnesty International which suggest 68 per cent of people in Northern Ireland are in favour of the reform.
